"Pier 24: The Inaugural Exhibition"
Pier 24 Photography’s The Inaugural Exhibition features selected works acquired between 2003 and 2009 by the Pilara Foundation Collection, which consists of over 2,000 photographs spanning the medium’s evolution. The Inaugural Exhibition brings together over 350 works that epitomize those genres and subjects most prominently featured in the collection such as contemporary Bay Area photography, American color photography, and portraiture, alongside photographs of historic San Francisco and the industrial landscape.
The Pilara Foundation Collection strongly emphasizes twentieth century American photography, with significant holdings of Robert Adams, Diane Arbus and Walker Evans. Countless international artists such as Hilla and Bernd Becher, Rineke Dijkstra, Cao Fei and Liu Zheng are also well represented. Works in the collection exemplify photography’s intrinsic ability to document, whether by recording the social changes of a particular region or capturing moments of high emotional tenor.
